It’s been nearly four years since Ajmal Kasab landed on the shores of Mumbai and massacred people at will. For a crime as heinous as he committed, it is remarkable that the Indian judicial system and the penal code allowed him to live all these years. The Supreme Court today upheld his death sentence and as reactions from people, media and politicians continue to pour in, I wonder at how this entire case is being treated.
Though it is unlikely that he shall escape the gallows now, there is every possibility that he will exercise his remaining legal options (a review, a curative petition, mercy petition, a challenge on the refusal (of mercy petition if refused) and finally getting a juridical review again) and delay his hanging as much as possible.
I have been wanting to see him cracking his neck on the noose but somehow as the news came in today about the verdict of the lower courts being upheld, it did not necessarily please me. I can’t see myself coming to terms with the way this case has moved at a snail’s pace and how crores of tax payer’s money was wasted on Mr. Kasab’s upkeep.
Perhaps it was for good that his trial took so long and that he was not executed in public view years ago (Gateway of India would have been a good place to do that actually) because that would have made him a martyr in eyes of all others who are being groomed by Pakistan to launch similar attacks on India.
On the other hand, a lack of political will in expediting this case, like that of Afzal Guru (who is on death row since 2004) has again proved that India continues to be a soft state. It is interesting to note that the Supreme Court cited his "unrepentant" attitude and his insistence on calling himself a hero and a "watan parast" (patriotic) Pakistani while upholding the death sentence.
It still remains unknown as how long will the nation bear the cost of feeding a terrorist on its soil. One part of me still calls for a public execution and a chilling death for Ajmal Kasab, something that sends out a befitting message to all our evil neighbors but then I guess, this won’t really happen now and the chance to do that is already lost.
Nonetheless, I continue to wait for the day when Kasab is hanged and done with. For now I close with a look back at all previous posts on Mumbai terror attacks.
