The following incident was reported in the newspaper yesterday. A 17-year-old girl was killed and her mother critically injured after they tried to stop a man from urinating outside their house in Hazrat Nizamuddin, Delhi on Friday, November 23 2012”. (Read the report HERE if you want)

Just looking at the headlines filled me with sheer disgust at not only the law and order situation in the nation’s capital but also at the fact that a human life is not even worth fighting for the basic dignity and civic sense.

A family lost a daughter because some inebriated goon wielding a weapon thought the world was his toilet. I don’t know how to read the entire episode. I feel angry, sad and disgusted at the same time. I am sure the absconder will be brought to justice sooner or later but then the question remains if a judge deciding his case will try and make an example out of his case and give a verdict that becomes a deterrent for all such scum in the society…I don’t know.

And what about the victim? Was the girl who stood up to oppose the miscreant at fault? Are our moral values primitive and out of context now? Is the moral fabric of the society already in tatters? Is it better turning a blind eye to all that is happening around you than standing up for what you believe in? What values should we impart our children now? What should we be teaching in our schools?

gadhe I don’t even wish to sound funny on this thing but maybe after this episode if the ruling central and state governments can’t clean up their acts and do something about the situation at hand, they better put some slogans and notices in place. Maybe something like…

“गधे के पूत…Please don’t shoot”

I truly understand Aastha. News items like these tend to shake you up and open your eyes to the horrors of the society we are living in. I really feel sorry for the girl's parents. Sad enough, the media dropped the coverage on this news in 2 days flat. Looks like the shooter is still at large...sigh..
