I have followed the news on the proceedings of trial against Ajmal Kasab and read numerous accounts of the survivors of the Mumbai terror attacks in last 4 years and have more than once been disheartened by the pace of the legal process thus far but the morning of Wednesday, November 21, 2012 brought the much awaited news of conclusion to the Mumbai saga. Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, born September 13, 1987 was hanged till death in the Yerwada Jail of Pune at about 7:30 yesterday morning.

I got this news via a TV channel much like most of the nation. The government carried out this execution with utmost secrecy and perhaps rightfully so. Personally, I still believe that he should have met his fate in public view perhaps right by the Gateway of India which stood witness to the burning Taj Mahal hotel on the fateful evening of November 26 four years ago. But then, I guess conceding the long standing wait, I am happy to accept whatever way he went down.

Reactions (mostly happy ones) have been pouring in from the masses and the celebrities and leaders alike on all social media about the hanging. There are speculations of it all being a carefully calibrated political move by the ruling Congress government to win some brownie points and use this move to gain some mileage in the wake of multiple scams alleged at its leading leaders.

Whatever be the case, I welcome the decision made by the President to reject his mercy appeal and appreciate the swift course of action thereafter to end his life. Maybe his death won’t necessarily make a difference to the course of lives changed for the family members of the victims except for a momentarily restoration of faith in justice and I am not sure if it will even be a deterrent for others like him but it will definitely save millions that were being spent on his upkeep and security and other services. Good riddance, I guess.

Hanged It may not be an end to the long standing issues in the valley, Pakistan’s deceit and notoriety or by any chance a confirmation that such attacks won’t happen in future, it perhaps does put an end to the chapter of the Mumbai terror attacks. The story of black day in the history of India and its financial capital concludes with this final nail in the coffin or crack at the noose so as to speak.
